What is the difference between Natural Stone and Engineered Stone?
Natural Stone
Natural stone slabs are cut from naturally forming stone that has existed for thousands of years. Granite and other natural stone products like marble, limestone and travertine are produced from stone quarries found deep in the earth where they are formed by molten rock and a combination of minerals over time. Made up of an ever-changing array of colours and patterns, no two pieces of natural stone are alike. One big difference between natural stone and engineered stone is that natural stone can be used outdoors, whereas engineered stone cannot.
Engineered (Reconstituted) Stone
Engineered stone is a man-made product comprised of approximately 93% crushed natural stone (usually quartz) and 5 percent resin. The natural stone crystals are ground and blended together, to which pigment are added to create a desired colour. This is then pressed, cured and polished to create a solid, dense slab that is very uniform in colour and pattern. If consistency in pattern and colour is important to you then engineered stone is a good choice.
